Kazoo is an Edwardian red-brick home located in Caulfield East nestled directly opposite the historic Caulfield Racecourse. The home, affectionately named after the racehorse whose winnings helped fund its original construction, recently underwent a thoughtful redecoration to honour its heritage while introducing a modern, vibrant spirit.
Having undergone a significant renovation in 2014 by Architects EAT, the new homeowners enlisted Alessandra Smith to elevate the original sitting room, hallway, children’s bedrooms, and the primary suite which formed part of the modern extension.
Inspired by Edwardian-era grandeur, the design embraces a rich, moody palette that seamlessly bridges past and present. In the sitting room, a deep slate-green envelops walls and ceilings, creating an elegant cocoon effect accented by jewel- tones that harmonise with an existing sky-blue velvet sofa. The statement Daniel Boddam wave sofa, rosso levanto marble coffee table, and custom-made Murano chandelier add depth and gravitas without overshadowing the home’s historic details.
Further enhancing the home’s unique style, custom Roman blinds in Catherine Martin’s Jungle Room fabric nods to the client’s favourite Florentine hotel, infusing a sense of playfulness into the space.

The hallway’s warm golden tones create a grand sense of arrival, while muted hues in the children’s bedrooms and primary bedroom offer a softer touch.
Kazoo blends refined, period-inspired elements with a fresh, modern sensibility, resulting in a layered, timeless interior that celebrates heritage and individuality in equal measure.
Design Development
This video gives you an insight into the detail that goes into creating a design development presentation for our clients. This is the stage where the final details are refined and selections made before we progress to procurement. The scope for this home predominantly focused on the sitting room however we also sourced some key furniture, lighting and art pieces for the kid’s bedrooms, hallway and primary bedroom. As with all of our projects, colour played an integral role in infusing each space with warmth and its own distinct personality.
